Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero, drawing criticism from several individuals. Some city residents, including former police officers, labeled his attendance as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘offensive.’
Mamdani has faced scrutiny for his connections with controversial figures and for appointing Ramzi Kassem as chief counsel. Kassem previously defended a Guantanamo detainee linked to an al Qaeda terrorist plot. Former officials, including ex-Governor George Pataki and FDNY Commissioner Thomas von Essen, urged Mamdani to avoid the ceremony.
Walter Matuza, who lost his father in the attacks, was part of a group that petitioned for Mamdani to stay away, partly due to his association with Hasan Piker, who made controversial comments about 9/11. Despite accumulating over 110,000 signatures, Mamdani attended the event.
Mike, a former New Jersey police officer, expressed disappointment in Mamdani’s actions and appointments. Steven, a mourner from Florida, criticized Mamdani’s presence at the memorial, and highlighted the need for educating younger generations about the true impact of 9/11.
Conversely, attendee John felt that Mamdani had the right to attend, as long as he respected the memory of the fallen. John lost friends in the attack, including at Cantor-Fitzgerald, which faced substantial losses on 9/11.
In response to the criticisms, Mamdani emphasized his pride in New York and focused on honoring the families and first responders during the memorial. Footage showed him briefly interacting with former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani at the event.
The ceremony was attended by all living former U.S. presidents, with former President Donald Trump attending a separate memorial at the Pentagon.
