President Trump’s Public Rally Moves
During a rally in Las Vegas, President Donald Trump shared insights into what the first lady, Melania Trump, dislikes about his public appearances. He mentioned her disapproval of his signature dance moves and gestures that mimic a weightlifter, especially when discussing transgender athletes. These moments, she feels, are not “presidential.”
“She hates it when I imitate no men in women’s sports,” Trump shared with his supporters, adding, “She hates it when I do ‘the weightlifter’.” He responded, “Well it may not be presidential, but I won the election in a landslide, so I don’t know.”
This isn’t the first occasion President Trump has disclosed Melania’s opinions on his theatrical rally behaviors. He has previously spoken about her aversion to his impressions and dancing, referring to Melania as “a very classy person.”
Disapproval of Dancing
Trump’s dancing, especially to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.,” has become a popular feature at his rallies. However, according to the president, Melania believes this routine does not reflect presidential dignity. Earlier in the year, Trump quoted Melania questioning whether former President Franklin D. Roosevelt would have engaged similarly, describing him as “an elegant fellow.”
“She hates when I dance,” Trump stated during a January address to Republican lawmakers. “She actually said, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?'”
In an appearance at the California Republican Party fall convention in 2023, Trump shared Melania’s thoughts, stating his dancing was “not presidential.” Despite her critiques, he acknowledged the audience’s demands for his dance moves.
“But people like it,” he contended, explaining that audiences often encourage him to entertain them this way.
Melania’s Views on Weightlifting Gesture
The first lady also disapproves of Trump’s hand movements that mimic a weightlifter when addressing transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Trump described Melania’s reaction as negative.
“Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible,” Melania had reportedly said. Trump’s response was, “I said, ‘But I did become president.'”
During speeches, Trump has spoken of this interchange multiple times, illustrating Melania’s consistent feedback: “It’s not presidential.”
Public Feedback and Presidential Image
Trump’s physical gestures and dance routines have become a hallmark of his campaign events, with his supporters frequently urging encore performances. Although Melania maintains a more reserved public presence and seldom addresses Trump’s commentary on their interactions, she is often portrayed by him as providing insights on his image and public persona.
Despite her opinions, the president persists in incorporating these routines into his rallies, affirming that they are popular among supporters and expected during his appearances.
