The competition for the Republican nomination for governor in Tennessee is intensifying as U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn and U.S. Representative John Rose vie for support. Initially, Blackburn was considered the favorite to win. However, recent polling indicates that Rose has significantly narrowed the gap. His surge follows an aggressive, self-financed campaign strategy.
Local news sources report that Blackburn’s Senate office was under scrutiny by the Senate Ethics Committee for allegedly using taxpayer resources for political purposes. Blackburn’s office denies wrongdoing and states the matter is resolved. Despite this, the issue persists as a point of contention in the race, raising questions about ethics and transparency.
Despite the challenges, Blackburn still holds a strong position. She benefits from widespread name recognition, having served in both the House and Senate. According to most public polls, she maintains a lead. Furthermore, she has successful electoral history in Tennessee, consistently excelling in statewide races.
She remains the candidate to beat, with structural advantages due to recognition and fundraising.
Rose, on the other hand, has utilized personal loans, around $13 million, to boost his campaign presence. However, the lack of an endorsement from former President Donald Trump leaves no candidate with a clear edge among the party base.
What Polling Indicates
Current polls suggest Blackburn is likely to secure the nomination unless there is a sudden shift among undecided voters. A recent poll by OnMessage shows Blackburn with 34.5% support among likely voters, while Rose garners 31%. State Representative Monty Fritts collects 25.6%, indicating divided opposition to Blackburn.
This poll surveyed 800 likely Republican primary voters from July 23 to July 25, with a margin of error of 3.5%. Although Blackburn’s campaign questions the poll’s methodology, its findings imply what seemed a certain victory for Blackburn has become more competitive.
Wes Anderson, the pollster, remarked that the race has tightened significantly, attributing momentum to Rose. Meanwhile, Blackburn’s campaign manager criticized the poll, arguing it attempts to influence further financial investments in Rose’s campaign.
An internal poll from June by Rose’s campaign showed Blackburn leading with 44%, Rose following with 29%, and Fritts at 12%. Conducted by McLaughlin & Associates from June 28 to June 30, this poll surveyed 600 likely voters, with a margin of error of 4%.
Another internal poll from Blackburn’s campaign further indicates her lead; she is ahead by 17 points with 42% compared to Rose’s 25% and Fritts’ 22%. Conducted from July 26 to July 28, this survey involved 800 voters, with a margin error of 3.5%.
Prediction market site Kalshi shows an overwhelming advantage for Blackburn, with her chances at 96.4% compared to Rose’s 5.2% as of Wednesday night.
