Recent remarks by John Mellencamp about President Trump’s directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” have prompted a response from the White House. Mellencamp, known for referencing the Gulf of Mexico in his song “Pink Houses,” voiced his disapproval during recent performances on his “Dancing Words Tour.”
Concert footage from New York and New Jersey shows Mellencamp interrupting the song’s third verse to comment. “Wait a minute. The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America?” he jokingly questioned the audience in Holmdel, New Jersey, and criticized the idea as a “stupid” one.
In another concert, Mellencamp, 74, paused during “Pink Houses” to question the name change, expressing doubts about it being correct. When contacted, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed Mellencamp’s comments, stating they were irrelevant to the administration.
Mellencamp, a longtime resident of Bloomington, Indiana, has frequently separated himself from Trump’s ideologies. In a 2017 interview on MSNBC, Mellencamp described Trump as “the worst president ever” without using Trump’s name directly. He also stated he would not perform for Trump’s inauguration, although he had performed for President Obama in 2009.
The name change originated from an executive order signed by Trump, proposing that federal agencies refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” A bill to formalize this change passed the House but awaits a Senate vote. The proposal has faced opposition from both Democrats and some Republicans, who argue it is a poor use of time and resources.
In defense of the change, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) compared it to the pride parents feel when naming a child, emphasizing the importance of names as symbols of national pride.
