The recent trial focusing on online safety for children against Meta started Wednesday in a federal court in California. The tech giant is under scrutiny for allegedly designing its platforms to be addictive for young users.
Jury selection took place in the U.S. District Court in Oakland, where the case combines lawsuits from multiple state attorneys general. The lawsuit, filed in 2023, claims Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have harmful features that lead to overuse by teens and younger children. It also accuses Meta of misleading the public about the mental and physical health risks involved and collecting data from users under 13 without parental consent.
According to the complaint, “Meta has harnessed powerful technologies to entice, engage, and ensnare youth and teens.” It accuses Meta of hiding how its platforms exploit users’ vulnerabilities and ignoring the damage caused to young people’s mental and physical health.
The trial originally involved 29 states but currently covers just four: California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey.
A Meta spokesperson stated the company disagrees with the allegations and is confident in proving their commitment to supporting young individuals. They emphasized continued efforts to work with parents, experts, and law enforcement to address these issues.
An appeals court recently denied Meta’s request to dismiss the case, allowing it to proceed. Additionally, the court declined to drop other online safety lawsuits against social media firms, stating Meta and TikTok appealed too soon.
