Metro Proposes Fare Increases and Free Youth Rides

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has put forth a proposal to raise fares for both rail and bus services. This proposal, if approved, could see these changes implemented by July.

Currently, rail fares are determined by the distance traveled, ranging from $2.25 up to $6.75. In contrast, standard bus trips maintain a consistent fare of $2.25. However, costs for express bus services are higher.

In addition to fare increases, Metro is also considering offering free rides for youths throughout the D.C. region. This initiative aims to make public transportation more accessible to younger passengers.

The proposed changes are part of a broader strategy to address financial aspects of the transit system while potentially increasing ridership among young people.
