Michael Douglas has recently confirmed a rumor that has lingered for many years. In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” the 82-year-old actor revealed his affair with Kathleen Turner during the filming of “Romancing the Stone.” This rumor had been denied for over 40 years.
Douglas described Turner as “smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice.” He shared that they were immediately attracted to each other, despite him being married to Diandra Luker at the time. He mentioned that his marriage was troubled, and both he and Luker were involved in extramarital affairs.
He explained that he went to film the movie “still technically married, but separated.” For many years, the audience believed they were in a relationship while making the film. They continued to deny the affair even through the sequel and while working together on “The Kominsky Method.”
The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship. It wasn’t a fly-by night affair; it grew naturally from how closely we were working together, how much pressure we were under, how much we respected and cared for one another, and how attracted we were to each other.
Douglas and Turner kept their relationship a secret for 40 years to protect Luker and their son, Cameron. Even the film’s director, Bob Zemeckis, and co-star, Danny DeVito, were unaware. Douglas mentioned having secret dinners and sneaking into Turner’s hotel room.
Turner and Douglas decided to end their affair after Luker visited the film set with Cameron, indicating to Turner that they were still married. After the revelation, Turner responded by saying, “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
“Romancing the Stone” featured Turner as Joan, a romance novelist, and Douglas as Jack Colton, a bird hunter. The film followed Joan’s journey to Columbia to rescue her sister, where she meets Jack, who agrees to help her.
Douglas and Luker’s marriage ended in divorce in 2000 after separating in 1995. Douglas later married Catherine Zeta-Jones in November 2000. They welcomed two children, Dylan and Carys.
