Michael Jackson Biopic Breaks Box-Office Records

Michael Jackson continues to reign supreme at the box office with his biopic, “Michael,” on track to reach the $1 billion mark. The film has already made headlines as the highest-grossing biopic ever, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which collected $975 million.

The biopic, released on April 24, has gathered $977 million, edging out “Oppenheimer.” Behind these films is Queen’s biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with $911 million. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, “Michael” chronicles Jackson’s journey from member of the Jackson 5 to global icon. Jaafar Jackson, his real-life nephew, stars as Michael Jackson. Supporting roles include Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.

Despite the impressive box-office performance, critical reception was lukewarm, with the Tomatometer rating the film at 38%. However, viewers’ feedback is positive; Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter gave the film a 97% rating.

β€œIt was only a matter of time. The King of Pop πŸ‘‘,” a fan commented.

Other fans echoed similar sentiments. Some acknowledged the difference in film ratings, noting that “Oppenheimer” was R-rated compared to “Michael”‘s PG-13 rating, yet recognized the pop icon’s enduring appeal.

“Michael,” despite its box-office success, faced critiques for not addressing controversial parts of Jackson’s life. Nevertheless, its financial achievement remains undeniable.

“Oppenheimer,” while not topping box-office charts, won seven Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, including prestigious nods for Nolan’s direction, Murphy’s acting, and Best Picture.
