Michigan Democrats are gathering for their 2026 state nominating convention in Lansing, facing controversies within the party. Tensions have arisen over antisemitic harassment and opposition to U.S. support for Israel.
Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced she wouldn’t attend the convention. Her absence is due to security concerns following incidents where anti-Israel activists disrupted pro-Israel speakers, including Rep. Haley Stevens, at a previous event. Nessel expressed fears of harassment and hostilities.
This convention occurs amid increasing pressure from Democrats wanting to cut military aid to Israel. This follows Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Abdul El-Sayed, a critic of Israel’s actions, has narrowly won the Democratic Senate nomination for a key seat. His victory is crucial for the Democrats in the midterm elections.
“I don’t feel safe going. I feel like my presence isn’t going to be welcome. I don’t want to get chased around. I don’t want to get harassed,” Nessel stated during a recent discussion. “If I go, that is what will happen because it’s been happening to me.”
The Michigan Democratic Party affirmed that they are committed to ensuring safety at party events. Spokesperson Derrick Honeyman emphasized rejection of antisemitism and hateful conduct.
Joan Lowenstein, endorsement chair of the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus, stated that she hasn’t encountered fears of physical safety at the convention. However, many Jewish Democrats remain concerned. Rabbi Asher Lopatin noted that previous members felt traumatized from past conventions.
“We got to be strong. We got to be proud. We got to be courageous,” Lopatin said, encouraging resilience within the Jewish community.
Stacy Gittleman, a lifelong Democrat, observed a drift to the left within the party at the previous convention. She noted the prevalence of Palestinian flags over American flags during the event.
Currently, Jewish leaders in Michigan are circulating a letter urging support for Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers. The letter represents concerns over a perceived anti-Jewish drift within the Democratic Party.
Mike Rogers has initiated a ‘Dems for Mike’ coalition. He noted that Democratic Jewish voters are expressing concern over aggressive rhetoric within the party. Rogers emphasized not asking Democrats to become Republicans, but addressing their concerns.
Abdul El-Sayed’s stance on Israel has alienated some Jewish voters. His comments on Israel’s actions, labeling them “genocide,” have sparked criticism. El-Sayed’s campaign focuses on Medicare for all and abolishing ICE.
El-Sayed, who could become the first Muslim senator, stated commitment to combating antisemitism. He aims to unite communities and ensure safety for both Jewish and Muslim populations.
