In Detroit, Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers is reaching out to Democrats dissatisfied with their party’s nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, in the ongoing Michigan Senate race. Rogers, who previously served as a congressman and FBI agent, is making another attempt to secure a Senate seat. During a campaign event in a western Detroit neighborhood, he introduced a ‘Democrats for Mike Rogers’ coalition.
Targeting Disaffected Democrats
The Democratic primary was contentious, with El-Sayed narrowly defeating the more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens. This has left some Democrats uneasy with El-Sayed’s progressive positions. Rogers aims to appeal to these voters, emphasizing his willingness to earn their trust rather than convert them to the Republican Party.
Current polls indicate a tightly contested race between El-Sayed and Rogers. A Fox News poll found Rogers ahead by four points, mainly due to strong Republican unity. While El-Sayed’s support among Democrats is substantial, it notably diminishes among non-DSA Democrats and independents.
Appealing to New Allies
Rogers is optimistic about his chances, citing voters who have never supported a Republican. Chelsea from West Bloomfield, a lifelong Democrat, expressed her support for Rogers. She highlighted her decision as motivated by a need to look beyond party lines.
“The Democratic nominee does not share my values,” she said, pointing to El-Sayed’s stances.
Rogers’ Strategy
Rogers continues to highlight diverging viewpoints within the Democratic Party. Rabbi Asher Lopatin joined Rogers at the event, voicing concern over El-Sayed’s policies and the treatment of Israel supporters at a state Democratic convention.
Rogers addressed fears among Jewish students about expressing their identity. He noted that these issues could influence the general election outcome due to the growing discomfort with violent rhetoric. Rogers remains hopeful that his campaign can resonate with these voters.
Despite the controversies surrounding El-Sayed, he emphasizes his commitment to fighting antisemitism and ensuring safety for all communities.
