Midair Collision Leads to Cancellation of Mountain Home Air Show

An air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho was canceled after a midair collision involving two fighter jets. The crash happened during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show.

Cmdr. Amelia Umayam, spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Air Forces, reported that all four aircrew members ejected safely. They were in stable condition according to a base statement.

The collision occurred two miles northwest of the base at 12:10 p.m. local time. The aviators were performing an aerial demonstration in two Navy EA-18G aircraft from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129, stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington.

Social media videos captured the moment when the jets collided and crashed, producing black smoke. Viewers saw four parachutes deploying near the crash site.

“We are incredibly thankful that everyone involved in today’s incident is safe,” said Col. David R. Gunter, wing commander of the 366th Fighter Wing housed at the base.

Col. Gunter also expressed gratitude to first responders and attendees for their support and patience.

The air show was shut down at 12:30 p.m. while emergency teams secured the area. Guests were asked to stay at the base until it was safe for them to leave, which happened around 3 p.m.

Police announced the air show cancellation and advised the public to avoid the area. The incident is currently under investigation.
