Mike LaFleur has been appointed as an NFL head coach for the first time, after a 12-year career as an assistant. He began his journey with the Cleveland Browns as an offensive intern in 2014, quickly progressing to an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.
In 2017, LaFleur took a significant step as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the San Francisco 49ers. By 2021, he had advanced to the role of offensive coordinator with the New York Jets and then moved to the same position with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. Now, he is in charge of the Arizona Cardinals.
Before LaFleur’s debut as the Cardinals’ coach, his brother Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, visited him. Their interaction, filled with sibling banter, also highlighted a heartfelt moment of mutual respect, captured by NBC. Matt encouraged his brother with words of pride, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity.
“Hey man, you’ve earned this [opportunity]. Go let it rip, have fun, and I’m proud of you buddy. I love you, man.”
Mike was visibly touched, expressing his unexpected emotional reaction to the support.
The Cardinals’ performance in the Hall of Fame game featured notable moments, though they concluded with a 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers, mainly involving second- and third-string players.
If Mike achieves success akin to his brother’s, it would be a commendable accomplishment. Matt LaFleur’s tenure with the Packers includes a 76-40-1 record over seven seasons, six playoff appearances, four seasons with double-digit wins, three division titles, and two NFC Championship Game appearances.
