In Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, Thailand, a shooting took place on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School. Royal Thai Police spokesperson, Trairong Piwpan, confirmed the incident, indicating fatalities and injuries.
According to Arsit Sampantharat, permanent secretary for the Interior Ministry, the shooter is reported to be a student who remained inside the school during the incident. However, officials have not disclosed the number of casualties or injuries.
Images from about an hour after the shooting show people outside the school, offering comfort to each other. Police and first responders were seen inside the school building. Although the building was reportedly secured, officials haven’t confirmed the status of the shooter.
A witness reported that students hid inside a classroom as they heard gunfire from another location. Police officers later escorted them out after ensuring the area was clear.
Southeast Asia has witnessed similar tragic events. In February, a 17-year-old stole a gun from police, attacking a high school in southern Thailand. This two-hour incident resulted in one death and two injuries. In 2023, a 14-year-old boy was linked to a shooting at a major shopping mall in Bangkok.
