Massachusetts is known for its top-tier hospitals, yet it struggles with high healthcare costs. GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue believes these issues are interconnected. As a former medical devices CEO, Minogue suggests innovation can improve access, cut costs, and reduce regulations, rather than relying on government mandates.
A combat veteran and former CEO of Abiomed, Minogue emphasizes a ‘patients first’ approach. “At Abiomed, our focus was on patient outcomes, aiding physicians and nurses, and saving system costs,” he explained. He criticized the heavy regulatory burdens on healthcare providers as part of the problem.
Minogue suggests less regulatory paperwork for doctors and nurses will improve healthcare access and incorporate new breakthroughs. “I’ve seen healthcare systems globally and understand the dedication of our healthcare workers,” he said. “A patients-first strategy can offer quality, affordable care throughout Massachusetts.”
Healthcare quality and access discrepancies between metro Boston and other areas concern Minogue. He highlights issues like the closure of Norwood Hospital, leaving residents with long travel times for urgent care. “The governor’s responsibility is statewide healthcare innovation,” he stated.
Minogue outlines fiscal challenges too, pointing to regulations funneling procedures towards costly Boston hospitals. “Shifting to outpatient and surgery centers lowers costs and simplifies processes,” he asserted. Despite having excellent hospitals, Minogue notes Massachusetts lacks outpatient facilities compared to other states.
As a former CEO, Minogue dealt with healthcare economics directly. “In 19 years, I never saw insurance costs rise by less than double digits annually,” he reported. To lower costs, he suggests allowing patients to choose their care plans rather than mandating treatments.
For mental health care, Minogue proposes using subsidized government payments to enable patient access to counseling, rather than relying on emergency rooms. “We should allow government-subsidized payments for patients to see counselors,” he proposed.
Highlighting mental health issues among correctional officers and veterans, Minogue urges targeted solutions for these groups. “They often end up in emergency rooms, not ideal,” he remarked.
Minogue emphasizes collaboration with healthcare professionals in developing his plan, ensuring patient-centered treatment plans for lower-cost, improved outcomes. “By placing the patient at the center, treatment can be specialized,” he explained.
Discussing waste reduction, Minogue targets inefficiency and fraud. “By identifying these, we can save hundreds of millions,” he claimed. He advocates for incentives linked to patient outcomes, rewarding healthcare professionals for cost-effective, quality care.
Having secured the Massachusetts GOP endorsement, Minogue is set to challenge incumbent Gov. Maura Healey. His focus remains on a patients-first healthcare overhaul, leveraging his experience and collaboration with frontline workers to bring practical change to the state.
