Mike Tomlin Hails Myles Garrett as Football’s Top Player

Mike Tomlin, a former Pittsburgh Steelers coach who spent 19 seasons with the team and led them to a Super Bowl victory, has shared his thoughts on the best player in football. Now transitioning to broadcasting, Tomlin has the liberty to voice his opinions and insights.

During his appearance on Pro Football Focus’ “NFL Show,” Tomlin identified Myles Garrett, a former Cleveland Browns player now with the Los Angeles Rams, as the “best damn player in football.” This recognition comes from Tomlin’s long-standing experience competing against Garrett in the AFC North.

“In the fourth quarter of football games, man, they were behind. Teams were running the football and this guy broke the NFL sack record,” Tomlin commented.

In 2025, Garrett made history by setting an NFL record with 23 sacks in a single season. Tomlin praised Garrett for achieving such a feat during times in a game typically not favorable for getting sacks. His addition to the Rams, a strong Super Bowl contender, makes his presence even more intimidating.

Garrett now joins forces with Aaron Donald, an acclaimed defensive lineman, in Los Angeles. The Rams, armed with a potent offense powered by MVP Matthew Stafford and star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, are set to create numerous scenarios where opposing teams will need to pass more.

Garrett’s potential for “money moments” could increase in these situations, helping to further enhance his already impressive legacy.

Garrett’s debut as a Ram is set for Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. Although Aaron Donald will miss this initial game, he is expected to return for the Week 2 confrontation with the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
