Milky Way’s Spiral Arms May Extend Beyond Previous Estimates

Astronomers have uncovered evidence suggesting the spiral arms of the Milky Way might reach further into space than previously believed. This discovery comes from precise measurements of dust clouds using data from two satellites—NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton.

The research team leveraged powerful gamma-ray bursts in distant galaxies. As X-rays from these bursts passed through the Milky Way, they scattered off dust clouds, forming rings that allowed for exact distance measurements. Beatrice Vaia, the lead researcher, emphasized the simplicity of this method, noting it depends solely on geometric principles, unlike other methods that rely on assumptions about the galaxy’s rotation.

Findings revealed that a dust cloud in the most distant arm of the Milky Way spans about 3,500 light-years. Despite a century-long awareness of the galaxy’s arms, mapping them has remained challenging due to Earth’s position within one of these arms. This new approach could transform our understanding of the galaxy’s structure.

The technique, though innovative, faces a limitation. Suitable gamma-ray bursts are rare, with only a few identified in the past 25 years. Despite this, researchers like Andrea Tiengo remain optimistic and continue to scan the skies for more.
