Minneapolis Mass Shooting Suspect Faced Unresolved Eviction Issues

The suspect in a deadly shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment complex had eviction proceedings underway due to several incidents, according to court documents. The shooter, identified as Carlton Neal Johnson, reportedly killed two people and injured six others.

CBS News learned from law enforcement sources that Johnson was the 35-year-old suspect. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson mentioned police familiarity with Johnson but did not verify his identity at a news conference. Johnson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Court records indicate Johnson had signed a lease at Shoreline Plaza, formerly Loring Towers, on Grant Street in March 2025. A letter from his building’s law firm notified him on June 16 about the termination of his lease effective June 29 due to multiple incidents.

Starting January, six documented incidents included an assault in March. On June 11, Johnson entered the management office and displayed a firearm—a behavior cited in his eviction notice. He also mentioned acquiring a new gun to residents.

A June 13 letter pointed out Johnson ‘flashed his gun’ to people, which breached his lease conditions. Johnson’s subsequent contact with management requesting a second chance was met with guidelines on firearm display compliance.

Despite the instructions, Johnson violated the lease again, confronting a security officer about gun use and brandishing his firearm in a communal space on June 25. Police were summoned, leading to Johnson attempting to bribe staff for information on the caller.

The same day as the eviction, the shooting occurred. Johnson had proceedings scheduled for September 11.

Authorities have not confirmed the identities of the deceased victims. Among the injured were three officers, with varying injuries including surgery for one after being shot in the stomach. Other officers faced effects from exposure to an ‘unknown airborne substance.’

Peterson praised officers for their brave response to gunfire despite challenges. Questions on prior police interactions with Johnson remain unanswered.
