In a tragic incident in Mississippi, an elderly man was fatally shot with his own gun during a struggle with an alleged intruder. The Union County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the details surrounding the event.
Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards discussed the event, explaining that Eric Basco allegedly broke into the home of Bobby McGill in the early hours of Thursday morning. McGill, aged 81, confronted Basco, resulting in a struggle over McGill’s gun. During this struggle, Basco took control of the weapon and shot McGill multiple times.
“It appears that there was a struggle that had ensued between the assailant and the homeowner,” said Edwards. “And he had a pistol that he kept in his chest there at the foot of his bed.”
McGill’s wife, Peggy, managed to escape the scene and called 911. She reported that someone had entered their home and attacked her husband.
Following the shooting, Basco retreated to a bathroom within the home and shot himself. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities suspect burglary as Basco’s motive, although Edwards mentioned that Basco had no significant criminal history, aside from minor traffic violations.
In an interesting development, investigators discovered a video from the night before the incident. It reportedly showed Basco walking near the McGill residence, making gestures and shouting “God is dead.” Edwards speculated on possible reasons for Basco’s actions, but concluded it was unlikely they would ever be fully understood.
“In Mr. Bobby’s yard was a cross and a sign that said, ‘Jesus is Lord.’ So did that help lure him to that house? I don’t know,” Edwards remarked.
Family members expressed deep sorrow over McGill’s loss. His granddaughter paid tribute to him through a social media platform, describing him as a devout Christian who held his faith and family in high regard.
“My Papaw loved the Lord above all else & he loved his family with his whole heart,” she wrote. “He made sure you couldn’t leave a conversation with him without hearing about Jesus.”
The McGill family has requested prayers as they navigate this challenging period.
