The New York Knicks face uncertainty with Mitchell Robinson’s injury as they anticipate the NBA Finals. Reports from ESPN indicate Robinson needed surgery for a broken right pinkie, causing concern about his availability. His absence would impact their roster depth against formidable Western Conference opponents.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, a prominent Knicks fan, expressed his views on “First Take.” He learned of Robinson’s injury from DJ Clue. Smith emphasized Robinson’s importance for the Finals, discussing the situation with colleagues Jay Williams and Brian Windhorst.

“They supposed to be chillin’. You supposed to be getting treatment,” Smith asserted, stressing the need for Robinson’s presence in the Finals.

Smith mentioned NFL legend Ronnie Lott, who famously played despite a serious finger injury. He acknowledged Robinson’s limited shooting but praised his rebounding and defensive skills.

“If this brother misses games because of a pinkie, I’m gonna lose it!” Smith exclaimed, urging Robinson to participate despite the injury.

The Knicks require every available player for the Finals, potentially facing teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. These teams incorporate dominant big men, making Robinson’s role crucial. With opponents like Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama, the Knicks need options beyond just Karl-Anthony Towns.

According to Shams Charania, Robinson intends to play in Game 1. Despite his free-throw challenges, the Knicks’ rest after 11 consecutive wins, including sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers, provides Robinson time to recover before the Finals on June 3.
