MLB Commissioner Addresses Bible Verse Controversy

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred addressed a controversy involving San Francisco Giants players who added Bible verse references to their Pride Night hats. The players will not face fines or discipline as stated by Manfred in response to concerns raised by Sen. Josh Hawley.

In a letter dated June 19, Manfred acknowledged the incident and noted that a “routine oral warning” was issued before the league was informed that players were not advised they could opt for standard caps. “The players were neither fined nor disciplined, nor will they ever be,” Manfred emphasized.

Giants pitcher Landen Roupp was one of the players who incorporated a biblical reference on the Pride-themed cap, noting “Genesis 9:12-16”. The verse refers to the rainbow as a sign of God’s covenant post-flood. However, reliever Sam Hentges chose to wear the traditional team cap instead.

Senator Hawley characterized MLB’s response as an acknowledgment of a “wrong” action towards Giants players expressing their Christian faith. Hawley had previously questioned why players received warnings over Christian expressions during the Pride Night event.

Further scrutiny arose when Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon indicated the Justice Department had referred the issue to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, citing concerns of religious discrimination.

Manfred clarified MLB’s uniform policy, which restricts the modification of uniforms. This rule was collectively agreed upon with the MLB Players Association and prohibits personal messages on apparel. “The policy is enforced without regard to the substance of the messaging,” Manfred asserted.

The regulation aims to prevent players from becoming conduits for political or social messaging. Despite this, Manfred recognized some players’ discomfort with the Pride emblem due to religious beliefs.

Past MLB controversies have involved Pride-themed attire, such as actions by Rays players in 2022 and Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw previously marking the same Genesis passage on a Pride cap.

Under a 2023 policy, MLB restricted clubs from special uniforms except in rare cases, like commemorative patches. However, Los Angeles and San Francisco received special exemptions to display Pride symbols due to their significant LGBTQ communities. MLB stipulated that no player would be forced to wear Pride gear, ensuring comfort with the apparel.

Manfred acknowledged the Giants’ communication with players was “inadequate and not clear” this year. This led to players unintentionally altering Pride caps when unaware they could wear standard uniforms.

“MLB believes in the right of our players and fans to express their religious beliefs, and supports all communities including the LGBTQ,” Manfred concluded. The league will continue prohibiting uniform alterations to avoid biased censorship while collaborating on policies embracing players’ values.
