Major League Baseball (MLB) has recently issued a warning to players following an incident involving alterations to uniforms during a Pride Night event. San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp, along with two other pitchers, wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps. Roupp’s cap displayed “Gen 9:12-16” in addition to the rainbow SF logo worn for the event.
San Francisco’s relief pitchers, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker, also added Bible verses to their caps. In contrast, Sam Hentges, another Giants pitcher, opted for the standard team cap featuring an orange logo instead of the special Pride Night version.
“The writing on the cap violates our rules and consistent with normal practice we have warned the players about future violations,” MLB stated. The league clarified this warning is not a disciplinary action and is unrelated to the message’s content.
The warning underscores MLB’s uniform policy, which prohibits writing or displaying messages on apparel or equipment. This rule has been applied to various situations where players added personal messages to their gear, such as ‘Dad’, ‘Happy Mother’s Day, I Love Mom’, and family member names.
MLB’s Pride Nights aim to show support for LGBTQ+ fans, with events like rainbow-colored logos and special performances. The league has been proactive in hosting such events due to its season’s overlap with Pride Month in June.
Roupp referred to the Genesis verse on his hat, highlighting his beliefs and the freedom to express them. He expressed gratitude for living in a country allowing freedom of belief and expression.
Giants manager Tony Vitello mentioned to reporters that there was no prior discussion with the players before the game. He observed that the players seemed to understand they have the liberty to make personal choices.
