Momentum Builds for Expanding College Football Playoff to 24 Teams

A shift towards a 24-team College Football Playoff is gaining traction. The College Football Playoff (CFP) announced Tuesday they are entering a 30-day negotiation period with ESPN. This indicates a serious interest in expanding the playoff format to include 24 teams as early as 2027, according to Heather Dinich from ESPN.

Currently, the CFP involves 12 teams. The new discussions, initiated by agreements between the Big Ten and SEC, aim to determine the potential value of expanding the playoff. The CFP released a statement clarifying this is not yet a decision to expand. Rather, it’s a step to engage with ESPN and assess further information. Negotiations are set to start as soon as Wednesday.

‘The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential Playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN,’ the statement read. ‘This does not represent a decision or commitment to expand, but rather an opportunity to engage with ESPN and gather additional information to help determine a path forward. The CFP will provide additional updates when appropriate.’

The proposed expansion impacts existing structures, particularly conference championship games. Dinich suggests these games might be removed if the expanded playoff can bring in an additional $200 million in media value, plus further revenues from tickets, sponsorships, and game-day sales.

For fans, the elimination of these championship games represents a significant change. These games have been popular for decades but often fail to influence national title opportunities. An example is last season’s Alabama’s clash with Georgia. Despite a decisive 28-7 defeat to Georgia, Alabama’s playoff hopes were not impacted, illustrating the limited significance of these games.

Though enjoyable, conference championships resemble exhibitions rather than deciding games in the national title pursuit. The CFP is exploring the potential for these playoff games to take precedence. Further developments on this front are expected within the coming weeks.
