Mother Warns of Missed Signs in Daughter’s Cancer Diagnosis

Emily Koska, a North Dakota mother, urges parents to recognize warning signs of serious illness after her daughter Miriam, aged seven, was diagnosed with stage 4 nodular ganglioneuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Her story highlights the importance of vigilance in recognizing symptoms that may initially seem minor.

Emily and her husband Michael, parents to Abram, 11, Ruthie, five months, and Miriam, noticed changes in Miriam’s health before her diagnosis in October 2025. The cancer, affecting nerve tissue, typically appears in children aged two to four, often presenting as aggressive tumors. These can grow rapidly, spreading to various body parts. According to MedlinePlus, early detection is crucial.

“Looking back, the signs were obvious. I have to live with that forever,” Emily reflected.

Emily recounts Miriam’s initial symptoms, including occasional leg pain presumed to be growing pains. As symptoms worsened, including a limp, unexplained fevers, night sweats, and fatigue, the family sought medical advice. After consultations with pediatricians and a neurologist, a comprehensive examination led to the correct diagnosis.

Quick identification by a pediatrician who considered all symptoms collectively led to emergency care where Miriam’s condition was confirmed. Describing the diagnostic journey, Emily mentioned the tragedy of potential oversight wherein neuroblastoma symptoms might be dismissed as less serious ailments. Cleveland Clinic outlines various signs of the disease, such as abdominal pain, trouble swallowing, and balance issues, which could overlap with other conditions.

Despite childhood cancer’s rarity, Emily stresses the importance of not ignoring persistent symptoms. “When symptoms persist, worsen, or don’t make sense, they deserve another look,” she advises.

Emily shares her experience to prevent complacency, urging parents to advocate for their children’s health relentlessly. Questions should continue until clarity is achieved, she emphasizes.

Fortunately, Miriam is currently responding positively to treatments. Emily reports that her daughter’s scans show minimal disease and that she is on the path to recovery. Miriam will continue treatment until 2027.

“It’s an honor to be her mom. She inspires us every day,” Emily remarked about Miriam’s bravery and resilience.
