The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general after a contentious vote early Saturday morning. This decision strengthens President Donald Trump’s influence over the Justice Department. The Republican-led Senate approved Blanche’s nomination with a 50-49 vote. Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney, becomes the second confirmed attorney general since Trump’s return to the presidency.
Despite Blanche’s previous role in leading the department as acting attorney general, his official confirmation may allow him to align more closely with the Trump administration’s objectives. Blanche expressed gratitude towards both President Trump and the senators, highlighting his commitment to his new role.
The confirmation process was fraught with challenges. Concerns emerged from both Republican and Democratic senators over Blanche’s ties to Trump. Despite this, he garnered enough support to secure confirmation. Blanche’s confirmation was notably opposed by Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, along with all Democrats.
“Deep concerns about Trump’s influence over the Justice Department persist,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, a top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The confirmation was complicated by controversies surrounding a settlement related to Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS. Blanche had to publicly promise to abandon Trump’s $1.8 billion compensation fund proposal to gain support from key senators like Bill Cassidy. Cassidy, who supported Blanche, emphasized Blanche’s capabilities over any personal alignments with Trump.
While Blanche’s nomination ultimately succeeded, opposition remained regarding his past actions, like creating the “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” This fund, designed to support those feeling mistreated by the judiciary and to protect Trump from IRS audits, drew criticism even after its rescindment.
Blanche, a former federal prosecutor, gained recognition defending Trump in various legal battles. His tenure has sparked debate over the Justice Department’s independence under Trump’s influence. Democrats accused him of leveraging the department for political gain, notably against former FBI Director James Comey.
Blanche’s supporters argue that his legal experience and direct communication with Trump during high-stakes trials make him suited to navigate the administration’s legal demands. Sen. Chuck Grassley emphasized Blanche’s contributions to crime-fighting and immigration control as reasons for his endorsement.
Despite the support, Blanche faces uncertain prospects in realizing Trump’s agenda. Attempts to prosecute Comey have ignited further controversy, with allegations of misleading actions by prosecutors. Blanche also appointed Joseph diGenova to investigate potential conspiracies against Trump. The results and future criminal charges of this inquiry remain uncertain.
