My Life Influenced by Sports: A Clemson University Student-Athlete’s View

Sports have been a constant presence in my life. My parents, both deeply involved in athletics, met during a track meet at the University of Florida. My mother went on to coach track at the Colorado School of Mines, and I often accompanied her, absorbing every detail of the sport. Despite trying various sports, I was always drawn to track and field.

Early exposure to college-level track made me aware of the opportunities athletics could offer. My goal was to reach Division I, and this ambition led to multiple high school championships and a broad network of friends nationwide. Track and field greatly shaped my identity.

Clemson University: A Transformative Experience

Being a student-athlete at Clemson University has been pivotal for me. The resources and community here are unparalleled, motivating me to improve continuously. Every day, I strive to push my limits in strength, distance, and learning.

With exceptional facilities and supportive staff, Clemson Athletics has helped me grow. My coaches urged me to pursue a double degree—a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Public Administration—and encouraged leadership through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and other initiatives. Their support has been invaluable.

Challenges and Opportunities in College Sports

Congress must protect the future of college athletics. Court decisions like NCAA v. Alston have disrupted the system, creating a patchwork of state laws. Institutions like Clemson support athletes, but disparities between different programs grow, affecting high school athletes’ opportunities.

Post-House roster constraints have impacted walk-ons and recruiting efforts. Budget cuts have led to the elimination of Olympic sports at some universities and conferences dropping sponsorships. Revenue sharing and Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) have been beneficial, but they lack adequate regulation, exposing student-athletes to exploitation.

The Impact of the Transfer Portal and Regulation

The transfer portal has changed college sports, affecting team loyalty and culture. Frequent transfers disrupt deep-rooted team relationships. Without regulation, these issues will persist, damaging the traditions that define college sports.

Action is needed to prevent irreparable harm to college athletics. Legislation like the Protect College Sports Act aims to align revenue sharing, NIL, the transfer portal, and eligibility. This bill could create a balanced environment for college sports, benefiting millions of student-athletes.

Failure to act may jeopardize future generations’ opportunities. The experiences that shaped my life might vanish, affecting new athletes like my siblings. College athletics can transform lives, and protecting them is crucial.

Ella Brooks, a Clemson University junior, studies political science and serves as Vice President of External Affairs for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She co-authored a letter in support of the Protect College Sports Act, advocating for improved regulation in college athletics.
