Residents along the East Coast experienced a surprising series of booms this week. Two significant events occurred in Boston and South Carolina.
Boston’s Meteoric Boom
On Saturday, a fireball created a startling noise in the Boston area. According to NASA, this was due to a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere. The fireball traveled at an astonishing 75,000 miles per hour. It fragmented approximately 40 miles above the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.
The energy from the meteor breaking apart equaled about 300 tons of TNT. This caused the loud sound that many residents remarked upon.
Speculation and Curious Reactions
The lack of immediate explanation led to varied theories. People speculated online about possible causes, mentioning scenarios like nuclear attacks or alien invasions.
Rich Sauro from Medfield, Massachusetts, was one of those caught off guard. As he attempted to nap, the boom disrupted his quiet afternoon.
Previous Event in South Carolina
Earlier in the week, South Carolina residents also heard mysterious booming sounds. However, the cause in South Carolina remains unidentified at present.
