Thousands gathered on the National Mall for a daylong event combining Christian prayer and political engagement. Hosted on Sunday, the event was titled “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving.”
The rally, promoted by President Trump, aimed to reaffirm the idea of America as a nation under God. Spiritual leaders, as well as members of Trump’s cabinet, addressed the crowd, emphasizing religious themes that resonate with many conservative Christians.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth delivered a video message early in the day. He encouraged attendees to “pray without ceasing,” a New Testament phrase. He also recounted a widely discussed story of President George Washington praying at Valley Forge during the harsh winter of 1777-1778. This story is often used to argue that America’s founders envisioned an explicitly Christian nation.
Let us pray for our nation on bended knee and let us ask our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, as Washington did on that momentous day, so help us God,
Hegseth’s words sparked cheers from those gathered.
The event featured speeches and Christian music, set against the backdrop of significant federal buildings. It sought to cement the idea that America’s origins were inherently Christian. However, this perspective is debated by many scholars. The principle of separating church and state remains integral to American democracy. The First Amendment underlines this by stating that Congress cannot establish religion or prohibit its free exercise.
While many attendees hoped for President Trump to appear in person, he participated via a prerecorded message. In the video, he read from the Old Testament book of II Chronicles. The passage, popular among his Christian supporters, is often interpreted as a call to national repentance and subsequent blessing.
