Bucharest experienced a tense defense situation when an F-18 fighter, participating in a NATO air policing mission, destroyed a drone that unlawfully entered Romania’s national airspace. This event marks the fourth instance this year of such breaches, as confirmed by Romania’s defense ministry on Sunday.
Colonel Martin O’Donnell of NATO’s military headquarters emphasized the alliance’s vigilance, remarking on its readiness to counter any threats. “Additional details regarding Sunday’s incident remain under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian,” he noted.
Romania, sharing a 381-mile border with Ukraine, has frequently reported airspace violations by Russian drones. Recent years have also seen floating mines threatening essential Black Sea trade and energy channels. While the defense ministry did not confirm the drone’s origin, it cited radar detection as the unmanned aircraft approached from neighboring Moldova, north of Galati, a southeastern Romanian city.
The F-18 jet, part of a Spanish NATO unit stationed in Romania, engaged the target upon receiving clearance, safely downing the drone at 5:01 a.m. The ministry reported that debris from the drone landed in an uninhabited area between two villages.
Moscow Hit in Ukrainian Strikes
Across the border, Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow region overnight, described by the provincial governor as one of the most significant assaults in the area. The attack resulted in at least one fatality and several injuries, following a strike on a warehouse in Podolsk belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries.
Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported the death of an 83-year-old man and mentioned damage at multiple sites, including a warehouse in Domodedovo, near Moscow’s main airport. A Wildberries employee was spotted amid a fire at the company’s logistics complex in Podolsk on August 16, with a visible smoke plume captured in images.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have downed 822 Ukrainian drones nationwide. Reuters video footage of the strike aftermath at the Wildberries Koledino warehouse displayed substantial smoke, located about 45 km south of Moscow. Ukraine has targeted Wildberries, accusing the retailer of distributing military goods, as part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russian economic structures supporting Moscow’s military efforts.
Russia Attacks Kyiv Overnight
Simultaneously, Russian forces launched missile and drone attacks on Kyiv early Sunday, igniting fires in at least two districts of Ukraine’s capital city, as reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The city’s military administration confirmed three injuries resulting from the assault.
Mayoral communication on Telegram highlighted fires caused by debris in a non-residential area of a northern suburb. In addition, several vehicles caught fire, and another blaze emerged in a district just south of Kyiv’s center. Witnesses in Kyiv reported hearing explosions during the attacks.
Tymur Tkachenko, Governor of the Kyiv region, indicated that three more individuals, including a child, sustained injuries due to drone activity across the region. In recent weeks, Russia has intensified air strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, escalating the ongoing conflict.
