Recent research highlights that a compound found in blueberries and grapes may aid muscle cells in breaking down stored fat. This compound, pterostilbene, has shown promise in laboratory experiments conducted in Japan. Researchers observed that pterostilbene reduced fat accumulation in mouse muscle cells cultured in the lab.
Pterostilbene is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in various berries, including blueberries and grapes. Previous studies have linked it to metabolic advantages, but its impact on skeletal muscle remained less understood until now.
The findings, published in the journal Food Bioscience on September 1, indicate that pterostilbene reduces abnormal fat buildup by promoting the breakdown of fat stored within cells. Fat accumulation can occur due to high-fat diets, inactivity, and aging. Excessive fat in muscle cells can hinder the body’s glucose and fatty acid utilization and contribute to insulin resistance.

The research team screened numerous food-derived compounds and identified pterostilbene as the most effective in reducing fat accumulation without disrupting muscle growth. It appears to safeguard a protein, PPAR-delta, which assists in regulating fat processing within cells.
This research also lays the groundwork for discovering other natural compounds that can protect PPAR-delta. However, the findings are preliminary, and further studies in humans and animals are necessary to determine if these effects extend beyond lab-grown cells.
Dietitian Johannah Katz emphasizes that while the study offers insight into potential mechanisms, it does not mean that consuming blueberries or pterostilbene supplements results in direct fat loss. The complex nature of human metabolism requires pterostilbene to be digested, absorbed, and effectively reach muscle tissue.
Blueberries and grapes offer various nutritional benefits, but this study alone does not confirm that increased consumption leads to reduced fat buildup in human muscles.
