Neil Bush Endorses James Talarico in Texas Senate Race

Neil Bush, brother of former President George W. Bush, announced his vote for Democratic candidate James Talarico in the U.S. Senate race in Texas. He criticized President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, describing it as “an affront to our democratic institutions.”

Bush shared his decision on Facebook, stating, “I voted early today, and I voted for James Talarico for the United States Senate.” This move was a clear statement against Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

At 71, Bush, a son of former Republican President George H. W. Bush and chair of Points of Light, expressed his long-standing Republican affiliation. Yet, he emphasized that “character matters more than party affiliation.”

Bush wrote, “I have been deeply troubled by Paxton’s conduct as Texas Attorney General, particularly his decision to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election in other states to help Donald Trump remain in power. I believe that effort was an affront to our democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power.”

This endorsement comes at a crucial time, with polls showing Talarico slightly leading over Paxton. A win for Talarico could mark the first Democratic victory in a statewide Texas race in 32 years. Recent close calls in Texas have yet to yield such a breakthrough for Democrats.

Neil Bush also mentioned Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House, dominated by Republicans, and his subsequent acquittal by the Texas Senate. However, Bush stands firm that his support for Talarico extends beyond opposition to Paxton.

He stated, “He speaks with respect, seeks common ground, and seems genuinely interested in bringing people together rather than driving them apart. His faith appears to be a deeply rooted source of humility, compassion, and conviction rather than a political weapon.”

Bush highlighted qualities he admires in public servants, describing Talarico as having “integrity, civility, humility, and a willingness to listen to those with whom he disagrees.” Talarico, he believes, is a “principled, pragmatic leader” who views public office as a responsibility to serve.

Bush concluded, “Our democracy depends on leaders who respect our institutions, tell the truth, accept accountability, and seek to unite rather than divide. Today, I voted against a style of politics that I believe has damaged our country. More importantly, I voted for the kind of character and leadership I hope will help heal it.”
