Malaysia Reports Missing Citizens in Nepal
The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that 55 of its citizens are missing in Nepal. Mudslide Disasters in Tibet
A devastating mudslide in Gyirong, a border county in China’s Tibet region neighboring Nepal, has resulted in 558 people missing and at least three confirmed dead. Among the missing are 260 foreign nationals. Norbu Tsering, the acting mayor of Shigatse, announced the discovery of three bodies and the rescue of two villagers. The number of missing individuals has escalated from an earlier report of 265. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive efforts in locating the missing and enhancing monitoring systems to prevent further disasters. Despite rescue efforts, accessibility issues persist due to severed roads and communication lines.
Australia’s Missing Citizens
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged the ‘very limited’ information regarding the 34 Australians missing following the disaster. The missing were part of pilgrimage and tour groups. Australia has dispatched crisis response experts and other personnel to aid in the situation. Minister Wong expressed the severity of the loss of life and damage.
American Tourists Among the Missing
According to Sunil Sharma from Nepal’s tourism board, 47 American tourists are among those missing post-flooding. The U.S. State Department is yet to verify these figures but is actively monitoring the situation and sending a disaster response adviser. Moreover, $500,000 is provided through Catholic Relief Services to aid affected communities. Over 400 foreign nationals are missing, as reported by Nepali tourism officials, in an area frequented by pilgrims and trekkers. Other countries including India, Canada, Britain, Japan, and Malaysia have announced missing citizens.
