The Netherlands overcame Sweden with a 5-1 victory in the World Cup, bolstered by two goals each from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo. This result lifts them to the top of Group F, following a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening match.
Brobbey’s strikes in the first half set a strong pace for the Netherlands. His initial goal emerged in the fifth minute following a precise cross from Cody Gakpo into the box, which Brobbey skillfully converted. He followed with a second goal in the 17th minute, again capitalizing on a cross, this time from Denzel Dumfries.
After the break, Gakpo extended the lead further. He netted his first goal right after halftime in the 47th minute, and another in the 54th minute with an effective right-footed shot from the left box.
Sweden’s response, a goal from Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, was not enough to close the gap significantly. Gustaf Lagerbielke appeared to score with a header in the 44th minute, but an offside call nullified the effort. Noteworthy is Lagerbielke’s noble heritage, being part of a baronial family in Sweden.
The Netherlands’ defensive efforts were led by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who made crucial saves to prevent Sweden from capitalizing on earlier chances.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the match at Houston Stadium was witnessed by Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, as well as a robust fan base who participated in the Oranje Fanwalk.
Crysencio Summerville added the final score in the 89th minute, celebrating with a signature gesture inspired by NBA star Steph Curry.
As group play progresses, Sweden is set to face Japan in Dallas, while the Netherlands will go against Tunisia in Kansas City.
