The political landscape in New Hampshire is heating up as the polls are closing for the Senate primaries. The outcomes may influence the Senate’s balance of power in the midterm elections. The Democratic primary features a contest between socialist-aligned candidate Karishma Manzur and establishment-backed Rep. Chris Pappas. Manzur, initially considered a longshot, has gained traction by advocating for bold policies like universal healthcare and a $20 minimum wage. She criticizes Pappas for his ties to corporate donors and pro-Israel lobbies.
Pappas, on the other hand, emphasizes his consistent support for changing the political system and distancing himself from billionaires. He maintains support from the Democratic establishment and unions. Pappas and Manzur offer contrasting visions, shaping the Democratic primary as a battle over the party’s future direction.
“I’ve been fighting to change Washington to get big money out of our political system since I got elected to Congress in 2018,” Pappas says.
The Republican primary is marked by a contest between John E. Sununu and Scott Brown, both former senators. President Trump has endorsed Sununu, strengthening his campaign. Brown, however, critiques Sununu for his ties to Trump and Senate leaders, arguing that he is not independent.
Brown’s campaign focuses on securing traditional Republican votes, while Sununu emphasizes his local support and commitment to serving New Hampshire. Sununu voices his stance against external influence, relying on grassroots support.
In the 1st Congressional District, Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, is locked in a fierce battle with Maura Sullivan and Carleigh Beriont. This contest highlights the internal divisions within the Democratic party.
On the Republican front, the race includes Anthony DiLorenzo and Hollie Noveletsky, with State Rep. Brian Cole also in the mix.
Meanwhile, in the 2nd Congressional District, incumbent Maggie Goodlander faces a challenge from Paige Beauchemin, representing a left-wing challenge within her party. Lily Tang Williams leads in the Republican primary.
Governor Kelly Ayotte seeks re-election without significant opposition, underscoring stability in the gubernatorial race. Cinde Warmington stands unopposed for the Democratic nomination for governor.
