Four arts professionals are ushering The Skokie Theatre into a new era. Owners Jose Pablo Cantillo and Kristi Cantillo balance their time between Skokie and Greenville, South Carolina, alongside Chris Matsakis and Monica Matsakis from Glenview. Their joint vision focuses on revitalizing this historic venue at 7924 N. Lincoln Ave., continuously operating since 1912.
Chris Matsakis shared the group’s passion for live entertainment. He mentioned that all four value teaching and working with children, while also wanting to offer a venue for community involvement. Their programming will be diverse, incorporating comedy, theater, storytelling, improv, music, and jazz. They also aim to introduce film festivals and live podcasts by upgrading their current equipment.
The purchase from former owner Wendy Kaplan was finalized on June 29. The new ownership plans to reopen in late 2026. They’ve recently received a $50,000 grant from the Village of Skokie’s Storefront Enhancement Program. Additionally, the theater exceeded its online fundraising target of $25,000 on Indiegogo.com, gathering $30,365. Chris Matsakis announced plans to reopen the campaign to fund further equipment upgrades.
The new owners leverage diverse skills developed in their respective careers. Jose Pablo Cantillo brings over two decades of experience as an actor, producer, and writer, including roles in “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy.” Kristi Cantillo, a former ceramics instructor, holds degrees in Fine Arts and Arts Education. Chris Matsakis, an entrepreneur and comedy enthusiast, founded and sold the e-commerce company Deal Genius. Monica Matsakis, a seasoned storyteller and educator, has taught storytelling and performed at various events.
The Matsakises plan to incorporate their varied interests into the theater’s offerings. Jose Pablo Cantillo envisions including one-person shows and standup comedy. Supporters of The Skokie will become founding members, enjoying perks like opening night tickets and exclusive experiences.
Physical renovations will update the décor, refresh the lobby, and add a bar and lounge, further differentiating The Skokie by meeting audience demands for varied programming.
While a full performance calendar is pending, initial plans include storytelling events. As Jose Pablo Cantillo prepares to embrace live performances alongside his film work, he highlights a growing trend of younger audiences seeking live experiences.
