New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for the cessation of all ICE enforcement activities in the state following a shooting incident involving a federal agent and an undocumented immigrant in the Bronx. This event triggered protests and confrontations with law enforcement on Thursday.
Mamdani’s Response to the Incident
During a news conference, Mayor Mamdani expressed strong criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stating they are a source of terror within the city. His remarks came after an unsuccessful two-hour conversation with President Donald Trump, in which Mamdani urged for the release of the shot individual.
“All they do is terrorize this city,” Mamdani stated about ICE.
Mamdani further accused ICE of operating with impunity and contributing to chaos. He claimed that the agency has caused more deaths than it has helped prevent. The mayor confirmed that the injured man was transferred from the hospital by ICE agents.
State-Level Reactions
Governor Kathy Hochul also commented on the situation, having spoken with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She expressed her outrage over the incident and pushed for an end to ICE operations in New York during her communication with them.
“I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York,” Hochul shared. She also requested the release of any body camera footage to clarify the facts surrounding the event.
Details of the Shooting Incident
Officials explained that an ICE agent opened fire during an attempted arrest of a man from the Dominican Republic. This individual, described as having a criminal history, was wanted on multiple charges. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the man received immediate medical attention and is currently alive, pending a thorough investigation.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided further details, indicating that a young child was present but unharmed during the shooting. She reported that the ICE agent fired seven shots, hitting the man in the neck below his left ear.
Public Response and Demonstrations
The incident led to significant public outrage, culminating in large protests. Demonstrators gathered at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, chanting demands to remove ICE presence from local streets. The protests saw some clashes with law enforcement as tensions escalated.
The atmosphere was tense as attendees shouted, “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace.” Police eventually made arrests during the demonstrations, managing the crowd as the situation intensified.
