With only one spot remaining in the league championship series, the White Sox and Guardians faced off Thursday night in MLB’s postseason. The game provided Chicago with a chance to break its American League Championship Series drought. Unfortunately, the White Sox fell to the Guardians 9-5 in Game 4. A win would have marked Chicago’s first ALCS appearance since 2005.
The matchup was crucial as Cleveland’s fifth-inning home runs fueled a second consecutive victory in the series, forcing a decisive Game 5 set for Saturday.
During the game, Patrick Bailey of the Guardians hit a pivotal home run in the fifth inning. The White Sox, who took an early lead, saw Sam Antonacci’s sacrifice fly in the third inning push their lead to 2-0. However, the Guardians responded with home runs from Patrick Bailey and José Ramírez in the fifth, taking a 3-2 lead.
The White Sox fought back in the bottom of the fifth. After Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch, Chicago tied the game at 3-3. A sacrifice fly by Brenton Doyle allowed the White Sox to regain a brief 4-3 lead.
Despite a late rally in the ninth inning that included a solo home run by Miguel Vargas, the White Sox could not secure a victory. Sam Antonacci managed a single during the final inning, but Chicago’s efforts fell short. The game concluded with the Guardians outperforming the White Sox.
Game 5 of the series returns to Cleveland with the first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
