A suspect in the killing of a 70-year-old man in New York and an arson incident, Thomas David Ryan, age 32, was apprehended on Sunday. The arrest concluded a statewide manhunt involving multiple agencies, including the FBI.
Ryan was arrested in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County, as announced by the New York State Police. His father, Robert Ryan, was found deceased in his Greenville home, which was set on fire last Thursday evening. Investigators determined the blaze was intentional, sparking the search for Ryan.
Details about how Ryan was captured have not been released, with authorities promising more information in due time.
State Police were called to the Greenville Turnpike home around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after reports of a fire. Once firefighters extinguished the flames, they discovered Robert Ryan’s body inside.
The investigation treated Robert Ryan’s death as a homicide from the outset. From the beginning, Ryan was characterized as “armed and dangerous,” prompting authorities to advise the public not to approach him but to contact law enforcement immediately if he was seen.
According to police, Ryan did not reside with his father nor had ties to Greenville at the time of the incident. Authorities believed he used his father’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius to flee the scene.
The manhunt expanded, with investigators reviewing surveillance footage from homes and businesses to track Ryan’s movements. Residents of Greenville and nearby areas were urged to check their cameras from 6 p.m. Thursday through the night for any sightings.
Throughout the search, Ryan was said to use shelters around New York and was known to visit the Plattsburgh area, approximately 200 miles from Greenville. Police also collaborated with rail operators since Ryan was known to travel by train.
The investigation included cooperation from the FBI, NYPD, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple other state and local law enforcement entities.
As of now, the authorities have not revealed a motive behind the crime, how Robert Ryan was killed, or the charges Thomas Ryan will face.
