In a surprising move, the Giants have waived wide receiver Darius Slayton, their longest-tenured player. Slayton, 29 years old, was a consistent presence over the past seven years in New York. Despite being less central in recent seasons, he recorded 37 receptions for 538 yards and one touchdown last year, with an average of 14.5 yards per catch. This performance ranked him second on the team in receiving yards.
The news came just days before their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, slated for ‘Sunday Night Football.’ Fans quickly reacted on social media. Comments ranged from shock at the timing to frustration over perceived missed opportunities for securing value through a trade. One fan noted his reliability during difficult periods, highlighting his impressive career as a fifth-round draft pick.
“Damn, that’s actually a shocker,” a user wrote. “Why right before the season? He could have had time to find a team,” another fan added.
During his tenure with the Giants, Slayton accumulated 4,435 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns from 296 catches. He ranks 12th in franchise history for receiving yards and 14th for receptions. However, his performance had been inconsistent, and a drop in production was noted alongside occasional issues with catching passes.
The offseason saw the Giants’ receiver room becoming crowded. Along with Nabers’ return, they signed Darnell Mooney and picked Malachi Fields in the third round. Odell Beckham Jr. also made the roster.
Given these changes, Slayton’s departure was unforeseen, especially at this late stage. Some teams might seek him as a depth option at the wide receiver position. Potential landing spots include the Raiders, Bengals, Panthers, and potentially his hometown team, the Falcons. A reunion with coach Brian Daboll in Tennessee is also a possibility.
