As the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has leveled serious accusations against President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security. Hochul claims the department is withholding significant funding intended for counterterrorism efforts.
During a press conference on a recent Tuesday, Hochul stated, “The Department of Homeland Security, which was established after 9/11, is withholding 40% of New York State’s counterterrorism funding.” She added, “That 40% equals $87 million.”
Highlighting her concerns, Hochul accused the president of jeopardizing public safety and defunding law enforcement as a form of political retaliation. She urged that political motives should not interfere with critical safety measures. The governor made a plea, “Release the $87 million you owe us. By not doing so, you betray all 9/11 families, every brave police officer and firefighter, and every New Yorker relying on federal protection.”
Fox News Digital reached out to both the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for responses regarding Hochul’s claims.
“The federal government’s refusal to provide the promised $87 million for public safety and emergency readiness is unacceptable,” echoed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a separate event.
Mamdani explained that the funding is essential for several critical operations across New York, emphasizing the need for fully equipped bomb squads and effective communication for the FDNY in case of emergencies. He expressed the lack of support as a serious burden on one of the nation’s largest cities.
This issue has prompted notable figures to call for accountability from the federal government. The withheld funds are viewed as crucial for maintaining safety and preparing for potential threats.
