Lions Standout Performance
Jahmyr Gibbs showcased his talents as the Detroit Lions secured a victory over the New York Jets, winning 31-24. Gibbs, who made a decisive 17-yard touchdown run, was pivotal in the Lions’ success. He added a second touchdown in the second half and caught an 11-yard go-ahead touchdown pass late in the game. Lions coach Dan Campbell praised Gibbs’ performance, noting his exceptional second-half play. Gibbs, inspired by Barry Sanders’ presence, contributed 20 carries for 99 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also recorded seven receptions for 65 yards. Gibbs is now the first player in NFL history to reach at least 300 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 150 receiving yards, and two touchdown receptions across three games.
The Jets fought back from a 14-point deficit, with quarterback Geno Smith connecting on two touchdown passes, including one to Garrett Wilson. Despite these efforts, a fumble from Smith, caused by a blitz from safety Chuck Clark, ended their comeback attempt. New York struggled for the second consecutive week, previously losing a lead to Green Bay. Smith performed well statistically, completing 31 of 37 passes for 321 yards. Wilson had ten catches for 107 yards.
For the Lions, Jared Goff was effective, completing 25 of 32 passes for 269 yards. A key moment in the game was Goff’s touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, extending the quarterback’s streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass. Detroit’s strategy of relying on Gibbs proved effective, culminating in Jake Bates’ field goal early in the second quarter. The Lions next face the Carolina Panthers, while the Jets prepare to play the Chicago Bears.
Vikings Overcome Challenges
The Minnesota Vikings achieved a hard-fought victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning 23-16. Jordan Addison scored a touchdown, and Myles Price returned a punt 86 yards for a score. Despite injuries affecting key players, the Vikings improved to a 3-0 record. Quarterback Kyler Murray, in his first full game following an earlier concussion, threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Addison.
The Buccaneers faced significant challenges. Quarterback Baker Mayfield injured his thumb late in the game, leading him to exit, with rookie Jalon Daniels briefly replacing him. The Buccaneers, now 0-3, struggled offensively and suffered multiple penalties. Mayfield was sacked six times and faced difficulties moving the ball despite a few promising plays.
Defensively, the Vikings limited Tampa Bay’s scoring opportunities. Significant plays, like a long pass negated by penalties or short-yard gains, highlighted their offensive struggles. The game also featured a sibling rivalry, as Vikings’ Max Bredeson played against his brother Ben Bredeson of the Buccaneers. The Vikings will host the Miami Dolphins next, while the Buccaneers are set to face the Green Bay Packers.
