The Miracle at Medinah from fourteen years ago wasn’t destined to repeat. Back then, Europe managed a comeback win over the U.S. in the Ryder Cup on American soil after trailing 10-6. This week at Illinois’ Medinah Country Club, the International team faced challenging odds in their pursuit of the Presidents Cup.
The Internationals began Sunday with a lead over the U.S., 10.5-7.5. Despite this, Honorary Chairman Donald J. Trump awarded the trophy to the U.S. team, marking a 17-13 victory.
I think these guys never lost faith, said U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker. He was part of the losing team at Medinah in 2012.I know what that team room is like. I told the guys last night that funny stuff happens here. Medinah has a history of funny things happening.
Cameron Young scored first for the U.S., defeating Ryo Hisatsune 3 and 2. Next, Justin Thomas secured a dominant win, besting Corey Conners 5 and 3. The Internationals gained a point from Tom Kim, defeating Wyndham Clark 3 and 2, marking the first International player to reach 4 points since 2015.
Scottie Scheffler triumphed over Nico Echavarria 2 and 1. However, Sungjae Im responded by defeating Sam Burns 3 and 1, maintaining a 2-point lead for the International team.
The U.S. then gained momentum, securing four points to lead 14.5-12.5. Chris Gotterup won 1 up against Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Patrick Cantlay overcame Adam Scott 2 and 1, Collin Morikawa beat Hideki Matsuyama 1 up, and Jackson Koivun claimed victory over Si Woo Kim 2 up, turning a notable comeback.
I cannot get over what Jackson Koivun did today,Snedeker praised the 21-year-old rookie.I put him in a really tough spot. We thought he could handle it, and he did.
The deciding point came with Jacob Bridgeman winning 1 up against Min Woo Lee, securing the U.S.’s 15.5 points to clinch their 11th straight Presidents Cup.
Someone in the crowd yelled, ‘You’re the best putter in the world,’ and I was like, ‘Yep, I’m going to make this thing.’ It was the coolest moment,Bridgeman shared.
Xander Schauffele continued with a 2 and 1 victory over Ryan Fox, while Nick Taylor and Russell Henley ended in a tie. With a final score of 17-13, the U.S. team boasts a record of 14-1-1 in the event.
When those pairings came out last night, it was the first time I got them right all week,Snedeker reflected. Those were my mistakes; I messed up the matchups. This was the first time I got it right, and those guys were ready to walk through that door for me.
The Internationals had a lead after Friday and Saturday but will have to wait until 2028 to try ending the drought. The next Presidents Cup will be on their home ground at Australia’s Kingston Heath Golf Club.
At some point everybody has got to play well,International captain Geoff Ogilvy said. It’s tough to win singles in the U.S. I was hopeful on the first tee. We were excited and started well, but it drifted during the day.
