Nico Iamaleava’s Season Cut Short
UCLA Bruins quarterback Nico Iamaleava will not finish his promising season due to a season-ending injury sustained against Oregon. This setback has altered his immediate plans, yet he has clear intentions for his future within the UCLA program.
Strong Start Before Injury
Iamaleava contributed significantly to the Bruins’ successful start under first-year head coach Bob Chesney. The team went 4-0 before his ACL tear during the Week 6 win. Despite this, UCLA aims to maintain their strong performance without him for the remainder of the season.
Iamaleava’s Decision to Return
“I’m planning to return to the Bruins and not enter the NFL Draft,” Iamaleava expressed.
According to CBS Sports College Football insider Matt Zenitz, Iamaleava intends to stay with UCLA next season rather than pursue the NFL Draft in 2027. Recovering from a torn ACL, this choice allows him to improve his draft prospects by producing more film for the 2028 NFL Draft.
Impact on UCLA’s Offense
UCLA’s interest in welcoming Iamaleava back is evident from their offensive performance with him. The Bruins averaged 39.2 points per game when he was the starting quarterback, compared to 22.5 points with Ty Dieffenbach filling in during his absence.
Upcoming Challenges for UCLA
While Iamaleava’s potential return is promising, UCLA faces immediate challenges. They are focused on maintaining their perfect season as they approach their Week 9 game against the Nevada Wolf Pack. His absence does pose challenges, but the Bruins are determined to continue their momentum.
