The Tennessee Titans executed a major trade during the 2026 NFL season, sending four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears. In return, the Titans received two first-round picks and a fourth-round selection. This significant move strengthens the Bears as they aim for their first Super Bowl win since 1985, while providing the Titans with valuable draft picks for their rebuilding efforts.
The trade has sparked discussions about the future of Cam Ward, the Titans’ quarterback. Ward’s second NFL season has been fraught with difficulties, raising doubts about his position. With the Titans’ current record at 1-6, speculation has grown over their potential search for a new quarterback before the trade deadline on November 10. Adam Schefter from ESPN addressed these rumors on ‘NFL Live’.
“The Tennessee Titans continue to stand squarely behind Cam Ward, and they still believe in him,” Schefter stated. “Although situations can change, the team believes that Ward, who has faced three different head coaches and three offensive coordinators, deserves more time to develop into the quarterback they envision. They are not currently considering a quarterback change, although circumstances may alter their current thinking.”
Ward’s performance this season has been underwhelming. Over seven games, he completed 129 of 208 passes, achieving a completion rate of 62%. He accumulated 1,179 passing yards, with four touchdowns and five interceptions, accompanied by 71 rushing yards. Ward has also endured 11 sacks and holds a passer rating of 73.8, which has declined from his rookie season’s rating of 80.2. Despite new additions like rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate and free agent Wan’Dale Robinson, as well as the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Ward has not yet improved under the leadership of new head coach Robert Saleh.
The Titans’ choice not to pursue a trade for a veteran quarterback appears sensible. Benching Ward could harm his confidence. However, if Ward’s performance does not improve soon, the Titans might face tough decisions as the draft approaches. They now possess two first-round picks in both the 2027 and 2028 NFL Drafts. This strategic positioning allows them to potentially select top quarterback prospects from classes featuring talents like Darian Mensah, Dante Moore, Arch Manning, Trinidad Chambliss, Julian Sayin, and CJ Carr.
The Jeffery Simmons trade does not necessarily indicate that the Titans have lost faith in Ward completely. Instead, it provides them with additional options should Ward’s struggles persist.
