Nicolas Cage Reflects on Missing Big Franchises

Nicolas Cage recently shared insights about his decisions to turn down roles in major film franchises to pursue projects that resonated more with him.

Cage’s Career Choices

During an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor discussed two significant moments in his career when he had to select between various roles. These decisions led him to decline parts in two prominent franchises.

One was when Jim Carrey wanted me to do ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and I said I’d rather do ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ and the other was ‘Spider-Man’ as the Green Goblin and I said I’d rather do ‘Adaptation.’

Ultimately, Jeff Daniels played Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumber, while Willem Dafoe portrayed the Green Goblin in Spider-Man and its sequels.

Choosing Award-Nominated Roles

Cage’s choices led him to star in critically acclaimed films. Leaving Las Vegas in 1995, where he played Ben, earned him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. His role in Adaptation in 2002, portraying twin brothers, brought him another Academy Award nomination.

Balancing Career and Family

Despite missing big franchise roles, Cage believes he made the right decisions for his career and personal life. He shared with Entertainment Weekly about taking on the challenging role in the upcoming 2024 film The Surfer, explaining the physical demands of preparing for the role.

Further, Cage emphasized his commitments to family. He turned down roles in blockbusters like Lord of the Rings and The Matrix to remain close to his children, as he prioritized his role as a father over career opportunities.

His dedication to family shows in his decision to stay present with his children, including Weston, Kal-El, and August Francesca.
