Northwestern Edges Michigan State in Thrilling Finish

In East Lansing, Michigan, Northwestern secured a dramatic victory over Michigan State at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. With a tight game situation and 3 minutes and 29 seconds left to play, Northwestern coach David Braun made a bold decision. Facing a fourth-and-8 at their 28-yard line, Braun opted for a fake punt. Tight end Alex Honig’s pass to running back Robby Preckel was tipped by a Michigan State defender, leading to an incomplete pass.

This decision initially seemed costly, as Michigan State gained field position to potentially win the game. Braun admitted, “Obviously, in hindsight, it was a horrible decision.” However, Northwestern’s defense came through, exemplified by Brendan Flakes blocking a 33-yard field-goal attempt by Michigan State kicker Liam Boyd.

Quarterback Aidan Chiles and running back Caleb Komolafe then led Northwestern’s offense downfield, covering 64 yards in eight plays over 58 seconds. The drive culminated in Jackson Kleather’s 34-yard field goal with two seconds remaining, securing a 24-21 victory for Northwestern.

This victory marked Northwestern’s first Big Ten road win of the season and prevented Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald from claiming his first conference victory with the Spartans. Braun expressed pride in his team’s composure and readiness, stating, “It showed just the composure and the maturity of this group… you have to earn that daily.”

Northwestern had to overcome several challenges leading to this victory. They faced their former coach Fitzgerald and contended with some difficult narratives during the week. Fitzgerald, fired from Northwestern amid a 2023 scandal, interacted cordially with Northwestern staff and players during the game, emphasizing the importance of the players over personal storylines.

Chiles, a senior who transferred from Michigan State to Northwestern, played a crucial role. He managed 226 passing yards and rushed for 60 yards, despite being sacked five times for a loss of 35 yards. Following a touchdown run, a two-point conversion pass to Honig tied the game 21-21.

After a successful defensive stand, Northwestern made significant plays in the final moments. Flakes reflected on the blocked field goal, “I just had a feeling in my body I was going to get the play.” Chiles responded by completing key passes, setting up Kleather for the winning field goal.

Chiles commented on the team’s determination, “No matter what happened… we were going to go down, and we would have taken that game to overtime or we would have won the game.” Northwestern’s strategic plays and resilience secured their victory and highlighted their ability to make key plays under pressure.
