Norway Secures Victory Against Iraq with Haaland’s Impressive Performance

In the World Cup initiative, Norway depends significantly on Erling Haaland’s performance. In his first tournament match, he rose to the challenge remarkably. Haaland netted two goals on Tuesday to lead Norway to a 4-1 win against Iraq in Group I.

The Manchester City striker marked his 56th and 57th international goals, which came during Norway’s first tournament appearance since their 1998 World Cup knockout round display in France. Haaland was born two years after that event.

Haaland stated he intends to continue meeting expectations with his performance: Of course I will try, said Haaland. It’s about continuing and not overthinking. It’s challenging at this stage. But I’ll focus on the next game and be happy while staying calm.

Norway’s coach, Stale Solbakken, commented on Haaland’s readiness after observing his relaxed demeanor during the team’s final training before the match. You could see that he lived up to the occasion, Solbakken said. The occasion wasn’t too big for him.

Leo Ostigard contributed with a goal in the 76th minute from a corner kick by Martin Odegaard. An own goal by Iraq’s forward Aymen Hussein just before the game ended rounded off Norway’s scoring.

Hussein, who scored for Iraq, equalized nine minutes after Haaland’s initial goal. Before the match began, players lined up for the national anthems.

Just before halftime, Haaland capitalized on a poor back pass to Iraq goalkeeper Jalal Hassan. He intercepted the ball and used his shin to score, pre-empting Hassan’s clearance attempt. Iraq coach Graham Arnold expressed the need to learn from such errors. It happened, Arnold said. It is what it is, and we have to learn from it.

Haaland’s first goal occurred in the 29th minute, following a cross from David Moller Wolfe. Haaland used his right heel to finish it, which brought enthusiastic cheers from Norway’s supporters adorned in red, partaking in Viking row chants.

Iraq, participating in their second World Cup since debuting in 1986, maintained considerable support behind one of the goals. This support helped Iraq momentarily return to the game.

In the 38th minute, Amir Alammari secured a ball on the baseline and sent a cross before the goal. It bypassed Norway’s defenders, allowing Hussein to head the ball, which slipped under diving goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, equalizing the score at 1-1.

This was Hussein’s 34th international goal, contributing to Iraq’s final World Cup qualifying victory against Bolivia, securing their World Cup spot.

Iraq’s Hussein Ali remarked on the pride of returning to the World Cup after 40 years, while acknowledging the disappointment of losing 4-1.
