The race for the Republican nomination for governor of Oklahoma advances to a runoff following a primary where no candidate received a majority of support. The two candidates proceeding are State Attorney General Gentner Drummond and former state Senator Mike Mazzei, as projected by NBC News. Both candidates secured about 25% of voter support in a field of nine participants.
Drummond brings experience from previous statewide office victories. Mazzei received a strategic endorsement from President Donald Trump via Truth Social shortly before the primary, which could influence the upcoming runoff. Trump expressed his support by saying, “It is my great Honor to endorse MAGA Warrior, Mike Mazzei, who is running for Governor of Oklahoma, a state which I love, and WON BIG.”
Current Republican Governor Kevin Stitt cannot pursue re-election due to term limits. His past elections took place in 2018 and 2022.
The campaign efforts have seen significant financial investments. Mazzei’s campaign benefits largely from his personal wealth, having lent nearly $7 million to it, part of an overall $11 million fundraising effort. In contrast, Drummond started with more modest support, securing a $2 million loan in April and an additional $500,000 in May. He has raised over $340,000 from individual donors, with political action committees contributing $12,000 since April. Overall, Republican gubernatorial candidates have invested over $22 million in the primary, according to Oklahoma Voice.
Before running for governor, Mazzei held office in the state Senate and worked in financial planning. His campaign focuses on eliminating state income taxes, enhancing property tax relief, particularly for seniors and veterans, and launching a literacy initiative across Oklahoma.
Drummond, an attorney and rancher from Hominy, has a diverse background including service as an Air Force veteran and involvement in banking with his prominent family roots. Recently, he has taken legal action against a proposed $4 billion aluminum smelter, citing environmental and agricultural concerns. Drummond also challenges his party’s attempts to combine religious elements with education systems. He has been vocal about criticizing Governor Stitt’s interactions with Indigenous tribes in the state.
Oklahoma has consistently supported Republican candidates in recent electoral history. The GOP has dominated presidential elections in the state since 1968, with Trump securing wins in every county during the last three elections.
