Novaya Gazeta Closure Marks End of an Era in Russian Investigative Journalism

The closure of Novaya Gazeta, a prominent Russian investigative newspaper, is set for November 9. The shutdown comes after more than three decades of operation. The paper announced the end of its run due to escalating pressure from the government. In a heartfelt farewell letter, the editorial team stated, “They’ve killed us.” This reflects the intense pressure exerted by Russian authorities and security services.

Founded in 1993, Novaya Gazeta stood as a beacon of independent journalism in Russia. Emerging after the Soviet Union’s collapse, it was known for critiquing the state and conducting investigative journalism. Despite the challenges posed by the war in Ukraine, the newspaper continued its operations amidst governmental pressure.

Recently, Novaya Gazeta faced dire challenges, including eviction notices and the freezing of financial accounts. These actions were linked to the ‘foreign agent’ designation by Russian authorities. The editor in chief, Sergei Sokolov, experienced detention and interrogation. Dmitry Muratov, a co-founder and publisher, received the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, dedicating it to six journalists murdered for their reporting. Among these was Anna Politkovskaya, renowned for uncovering rights abuses and the Kremlin’s Chechnya wars. She was fatally shot in 2006 outside her home.
