Obama Presidential Center Ceremony Highlights Unique Bond Between Former Leaders

The friendship between former first lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush was evident at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. This event took place on Thursday, enhancing their public image as a pair capable of bridging political divides.

Before the ceremony began, Bush playfully handed Michelle Obama a tin of Altoids. This gesture was reminiscent of a viral moment from the funeral of Sen. John McCain in 2018. At that event, Bush discreetly passed Obama what was reported to be a cough drop. The moment became a symbol of their growing camaraderie.

“President Bush and I, we are forever seatmates because of protocol. That’s how we sit at all the official functions,” Obama stated on the “Today” show, referring to ceremonial seating assignments. “He is my partner in crime at every major event where all the ‘formers’ gather.”

Obama expressed fondness for Bush, describing him as “a wonderful man” and “a funny man” during her interview. “I love him to death,” she declared, reinforcing the bond between them.

Several months later, Bush repeated the gesture at his father’s funeral by discreetly passing Obama a mint or candy during their handshake. In a later conversation with his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, he clarified that it was an Altoid he had given Obama at McCain’s funeral.

Bush commented, “It turns out the country is starved to see a White center-right Republican and an African American center-left Democrat having fun and being able to converse, not as political figures, but as citizens.” The exchange on Thursday was well-received, as evidenced by Michelle Obama’s smile and acknowledgment when she held the tin for a photograph with Bush.

During the ceremony at the presidential center, the stage was shared by Bush, his wife Laura Bush, and other political figures including Bill and Hillary Clinton and Joe and Jill Biden. The event, coinciding with Juneteenth, marked the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, underscoring the theme of unity among former leaders.
