Obama Presidential Center’s Unique Influence and Offerings in Chicago

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago reflects Barack Obama’s influence, from its South Side location to unique interior elements like the textured stone in its tower and distinctive reading chairs. Officially opening to the public on Juneteenth, it has already welcomed tens of thousands for a preview, including families of staff, students, and media. Workers are completing art installations and landscaping before the grand opening of the 20-acre campus.

About the Center

With a budget of around $850 million, the center covers the political and personal achievements of the first Black U.S. president. The museum showcases campaign items and presidential artifacts in its tower, while public spaces feature a library, basketball court, and grilling area, emphasizing Obama’s values.

Josh Harris, Obama Foundation’s vice president of public engagement, highlighted the center as a space for reflections on Obama’s presidency and building community change. He hopes it will attract about 1 million visitors every year.

Digital Museum Experience

The center introduces the first fully digital presidential museum. Instead of physical documents, it offers interactive exhibits about Obama’s campaigns, significant presidency events, and life in the White House.

A highlight is a life-sized Oval Office replica. Visitors, including students, enjoy sitting behind the Resolute Desk, experiencing a sense of possibility, as Harris noted. Other exhibit areas cover the Affordable Care Act, immigration, and memorable moments, such as Obama singing “Amazing Grace.”

Organizers emphasize areas for personal reflection. Museum Director Louise Bernard mentioned the importance of inviting change on both small and large scales.

Interactive Exhibits and Tours

“This center is more than just a museum; it’s a place for community engagement and personal growth,” said Obama during the groundbreaking.

A display includes Michelle Obama’s wardrobes, with a dozen outfits like the black and red Narciso Rodriguez dress from the 2008 Election Night. Visitors can touch fabric swatches from Michelle’s final state dinner gown in 2016.

Personal Influence in Design

Located near where Obama began his political journey, the center includes a basketball court and a garden designed by Michelle. Public charcoal grills are available, reflecting Obama’s memories of grilling in Chicago parks.

The campus showcases commissioned art and areas named after historical figures, such as “John Lewis Plaza.” A new library branch includes a 70-foot mural featuring icons like Walt Whitman and James Baldwin, with Toni Morrison reading to a young Obama.

The presidential reading room offers thousands of books picked by the Obamas, with notable reading chairs echoing those in their home.

Admission and Accessibility

At $30, the admission fee is the highest for any U.S. presidential museum. The Obama Foundation supports the cost with the advanced facilities offered. Comparatively, other museums, like the Richard Nixon Library, charge $29.

Despite the fee, most of the campus is free, except for museum tower floors. Amenities like the playground, library, and outdoor areas, along with the tower’s panoramic top floor, are free, aiming to be accessible to the public.

“We designed this campus to be open and affordable for everyone,” Harris emphasized.
